Kit Siang wants A-G to act against Dr M first

By Emily Ding

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 — The DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said today that he would take Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to court for sedition and defamation if the attorney-general failed to do so.
He made the call after DAP MP for Segambut, Lim Lip Eng, lodged a police report at 10.30am today at the Jinjang police station in the city against Dr Mahathir over the former prime minister’s “Gelang Patah” blog post on chedet.cc last week.
“I will give the Attorney-General Tan Sri Gani Patail the opportunity to arrest and charge Mahathir for sedition and criminal defamation before I instruct my lawyers to institute legal proceedings against Mahathir,” Kit Siang said in a press statement today.
He said he had given Dr Mahathir (picture) two opportunities to withdraw and apologise for remarks which attacked his reputation and character.
“But the former Prime Minister had been totally unmoved and unrepentant,” he added.
A Kit Siang win in Johor’s Gelang Patah would result in racial clashes that would ruin the existing cooperation between the Malay majority and the Chinese community, Dr Mahathir had written on Thursday.
“Kit Siang is going to bring about conflict and antagonism between the races, to wage the Chinese to dislike and hate the Malays,” he said.
An incumbent in the Ipoh Timor seat in Perak, the 72-year-old Kit Siang was recently announced as the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) candidate in Gelang Patah to lead the opposition’s charge to wipe out as many MCA-held seats as possible in the southern state.
“I repeated that all these three allegations by Mahathir are downright lies and falsehoods, which I had never uttered in Gelang Patah and Johore,” Kit Siang said.
The 87-year-old Dr Mahathir has become a de facto campaigner-in-chief for the Barisan Nasional (BN), going on the stump with the vigour of a much younger man as the 13-party coalition faces what is seen as its stiffest challenge ever from the opposition PR pact.
