Ibrahim Ali not on BN’s list for Pasir Mas, say sources

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 — The Barisan Nasional (BN) will name a local Umno leader for the Pasir Mas federal seat instead of courting controversy by putting Datuk Ibrahim Ali on its ticket for Election 2013, say sources.
The Malaysian Insider understands that BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Kelantan BN liaison chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed want to avoid being linked to the controversial Malay rights group Perkasa president.
“Ibrahim Ali (picture) isn’t on the list,” said a source, who has knowledge of the candidates list for Kelantan that was handed yesterday to Mustapa, who will issue the list today.
“Najib and Tok Pa are committed to bringing in new faces with a more holistic and advanced view on race relations,” said another source, adding this would rule out Ibrahim from being a BN candidate.
Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had pushed for Ibrahim’s inclusion on a BN ticket recently, saying the Perkasa chief was a saviour to the nation.
Dr Mahathir is also patron of Perkasa, which espouses for Malay rights already in the Federal Constitution.
Ibrahim contested on PAS ticket in Election 2008 and won the Pasir Mas seat. He then declared himself independent but is seen as close to BN and Umno.
He founded Perkasa to fight for Malay rights after the historic polls deprived BN of its two-thirds parliamentary majority and control of four states. The group comprises some 200,000 members who are mostly from Umno.
