Colonel Muammar Gaddafi seized power in a military coup in 1969. His dictatorship came to an end after six months of pro-democracy protests and bloody battles between rebel forces and Gaddafi loyalists.
After rebels captured his fortified compound in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, Gaddafi fled to his hometown, Sirte. On October 20 Gaddafi was captured and is held in custody, the NTC reported.
