China
could be the next country to go bust, if its headlong rush
to build
ever-taller skyscrapers is a guide to its future economic
health.
According to a study by Barclays Capital, the mania for
skyscrapers over
the last 140 years is a sure indicator of an
imminent crash. More
recently, Dubai built a forest of skyscraping
offices, hotels and
apartment buildings, including the world’s tallest
, the Burj Khalifa,
before it got into terrible financial difficulties
. In 2010 Dubai had to
be bailed out by its neighbour, Abu Dhabi,
to avoid going bankrupt.
International Commerce Center
Height: 484.0 m (1,587.9 ft)
Floor count: 108
The International Commerce Centre is a 108 floor, 484 m (1,588
ft)
skyscraper completed in 2010 in West Kowloon, Hong Kong.
A five-star
hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong occupies floors 102 to 118.
The
world’s highest swimming pool and bar (OZONE) can be found
on the top
118th floor. The building also contains an observation
deck on the 100th
floor called Sky100 which opened to the publi
in April 2011. The 101st
floor is leased to a number of five-star restaurants.
Shanghai World Financial Center
Height: 492.0 m (1,614.2 ft) Floor count: 101
Shanghai World Financial Center is a mixed-use skyscraper,
consisting of offices, hotels, conference rooms, observation
decks, and
ground-floor shopping malls. Park Hyatt Shanghai
is the hotel component,
containing 174 rooms and suites. Occupying
the 79th to the 93rd floors,
it is the second-highest hotel in the world,
surpassing the Grand Hyatt
Shanghai on the 53rd to 87th floors of the
neighboring Jin Mao Tower.
Taipei 101
Height: 508 m (1,666.7 ft) Floor count: 101
Taipei 101 ranked officially as the world’s tallest from 2004
until
the opening of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2010. Taipei 101
comprises
101 floors above ground and 5 floors underground. The tower is
designed
to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. A multi-level shopping
mall adjoining
the tower houses hundreds of fashionable stores,
restaurants and clubs.
Busan Lotte Tower
Height: 510.2 m (1,674 ft) Floor count: 110
The Busan Lotte World Tower is a 110-floor, 510.1 m (1,674
ft) supertall
skyscraper project in Busan, South Korea. When build it
will become the fifth
tallest building in the world.
Pentominium
Height: 515.95 m (1,693 ft) Floor count: 122
6-Pentominium
When completed, the residential tower will be 516 m (1,693 ft)
tall, with
122 floors above ground. It was designed by architects Aedas
and funded
by Trident International Holdings. The AED 1.46 billion
(US$400 million)
construction contract was awarded to Arabian
Construction Company.
The Pentominium has one of the deepest excavations
done in the world.
One World Trade Center
Height: 541.32 m (1,776 ft) Floor count: 104
The 104-story supertall skyscraper is being constructed in the
northwest
corner of the 16-acre World Trade Center site, occupying the
location where
the original 8-story 6 World Trade Center once stood. At
the time of its
completion in 2013, One World Trade Center will be the
tallest building in
the Western Hemisphere and the third-tallest
building in the world by pinnacle
height, with its spire reaching a
symbolic 1,776 feet (541.3 m) in reference to
the year of American
independence.
Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower

Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower is a building complex in Mecca,
Saudi Arabia.
The complex holds several world records, such as the
tallest hotel in the world,
the tallest clock tower in the world, the
world’s largest clock face,[2] and
the world’s largest building floor
area.
Shanghai Tower
Height: 632 m (2,073 ft) Floor count: 121
The Shanghai Tower is a supertall skyscraper under construction
in the Pudong
district of Shanghai, China.Upon its completion in 2014,
the building will rise
approximately 632 metres (2,073 ft) and will have
121 stories, with a total floor
area of 380,000 m2 (4,090,000 sq ft).
Pingan International Finance Center
Height: 660 m (2,165 ft) Floor count: 115
The Pingan International Finance Center is a 115-storey supertall
skyscraper
that is under construction in Shenzhen, China. It is expected
to be completed
in 2015, and will at that time be the second-tallest
building in the world, as wel
l as the tallest in China, standing a total
of 660 m (2,165 ft) high. The Finance
Center complex will also include a
307-m (1,007-ft), 66-story hotel building.
Burj Khalifa
Height: 828 m (2,717 ft) Floor count: 163
Burj Khalifa is the tallest manmade structure in the world, at
829.84 m (2,723 ft).
The total cost for the project was about US$1.5
billion. The building
has returned the location of Earth’s tallest
freestanding structure to the Middle East
where the Great Pyramid of
Giza claimed this achievement for almost four
millennia before being
surpassed in 1311 by Lincoln Cathedral in England.
