PAS renews support to Palestinians, reminds Israel's illegal origin

Jan 30: PAS leaders have renewed the party's stance against the Zionist state of Israel, saying any suggestions of forging ties with the regime was tantamount to betrayal of the Palestinian struggle.

PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu (right) in comments to  Harakahdaily reiterated the party's solidarity with Palestinian groups in rejecting any recognition to Israel as a state.

“They (Israel) grabbed the lands through brutal and cruel killings and confiscation from the Palestinian people.

"This is not like a colonisation. The Palestinians had been forced out by Israel with the Haganah army's brutality. We will never accept such a state,” said Sabu referring to an extremist Jewish paramilitary group in British-era Palestine during the 1920s, that now forms the core of the Israeli Defence Force.

Reacting to UMNO leaders' reaction, Anwar clarified that his call for protection of Israeli rights as reported by the Wall Street Journal was conditional and no different than the Malaysian government's support for a two-state solution, in which a Palestinian state co-exists with a neighbouring Israeli state.

“Let me stress that the needs and rights of the Palestinian people must be guarded and that includes the right to their own country and to not be victimised. I also stated that if this is met then Israel’s rights should also be respected,” Anwar said, warning those who he said was twisting his remarks to depict him as pro-Israel, a frequent allegation made by UMNO leaders.
'Side with the oppressed'

Meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan reminded leaders of Pakatan Rakyat that Israel was an illegal entity, and the Zionist regime's countless atrocities against Palestinians could not be ignored by Muslims the world over.

“Even in the name of maintaining good ties with the US in our future quest to take over Putrajaya, it is simply not acceptable and appropriate to support Israel," he wrote.

PAS Ulama Wing's vice-head Dr Mahfodz Mohamed reminded PR that it was more critical to side with the oppressed and not the oppressor in the Palestinian issue.

“Many Palestinians were evicted from their homes to make way for the Israelis. The Palestinians are suffering until today. We, as fellow Muslims, must be with them instead and not the other way around,” he was quoted as saying.
The state of Israel, bordering Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt, was carved out of Palestinian lands in 1948 through dealings by European colonial powers. In the past, its Zionist ideology, which claims that Palestinian was a God's "promised land" for the Jews, had been condemned by members of the United Nations General Assembly for its racist and discriminatory policies against Palestinians.
